Activity Levels

Travel with The Met itineraries are planned with extreme care and attention to detail to ensure a memorable and culturally rewarding trip for all its participants. We welcome all travelers, but for the most enjoyable and pleasant experience, please consider the physical activity involved in each trip when choosing the program best suited for your health, physical condition, and individual circumstances. For all group trips, regardless of activity level, we believe that a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and flexibility are truly invaluable.

The following activity level guidelines are provided to give you an idea of the pacing of our programs and to help you select a trip that matches your expectations in terms of daily activity, skills, physical stamina, or acclimatization to altitude required for each itinerary. All of the programs involve walking, sometimes on uneven surfaces, using stairs at monuments and other locations, climbing in and out of various conveyances, and exploring areas that may not be handicapped accessible.

Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time a reservation is made. If you have any questions regarding the fitness level and the physical requirements of a particular program, please contact us by phone at 212-650-2110 or email travelwiththemet@metmuseum.org.

Light: Easy pace, some walking on typically flat terrain, and ascending and descending stairs without handrails. Possible standing for extended periods of time on tours. Travelers should be comfortable participating in up to three hours of physical activity per day.

Moderate: Faster pace, considerable distances covered, walking on uneven surfaces, and ascending and descending stairs without handrails. Standing for extended periods of time on tours. Possible exposure to high altitudes. Possible use of Zodiacs (or similar watercrafts) on some cruise programs. Travelers should be comfortable participating in up to five hours of physical activity per day.

Active: Vigorous pace, long distances, extensive movement, and activities of higher intensity. Occasional steep ascents and extended walking, possibly in remote or rugged regions with difficult terrain, such as dirt roads, gravel paths, or sand. Possible high altitudes. Possible use of Zodiacs (or similar watercrafts) on some cruise programs. Itineraries may include hiking or biking on some of the land programs. Travelers should be comfortable participating in up to seven hours of physical activity per day.

Challenging: Although most of these programs do not require previous experience in trekking or similar activity, participants must have a high fitness level and be able to sustain exercise for prolonged periods of time. Itineraries are usually in remote or rugged regions with challenging terrain, possibly in high altitudes with steep ascents/descents. Travelers should be comfortable participating in up to eight hours of physical activity per day and should be prepared for extensive periods of aerobic activity, such as full-day hiking or biking.
